Hi. I changed the batteries on my TI-86 and when I tried to turn it back on the screen was completely black. Do you know what the issue could be?

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

If the screen is completely black, go the other way, using the Down-arrow instead of the Up-arrow.

If this doesn't do it, please reply to this post and we'll go on from there.

Every time you change batteries this will happen to you. First press 2nd then press and hold the down arrow. Hold until their is no black in the background but you can still see the numbers on the screen.

New batteries in my TI-86 the screen is black

Try adjusting the screen contrast. Turn the calculator on. Press and release the 2nd key. Press and hold the down-arrow key to lighten or the up-arrow key to darken the screen.

If this doesn't do it, please reply to this post and we can try something else.

I stop using my TI-86 for a few months and know

I hadn't used mine in years and had the same problem. Essentially you just need to give it a workout to get all the pixels working properly again and then it'll be just fine. I adjusted the contrast between full dark and nothing multiple times and turned the calculator on and off after each cycle and now it works like new.

Switched the TI-86's batteries but im getting a black screen

Hi,
After changing the batteries the calculator is o restored to factory defaults, but the screen contrast may change. The screen may be too light to see anything. Darken it a bit.
Press [2nd] key and release it.
Press and hold [UpArrow] until screen is dark enough.

Hope it helps.
Thank You for using FixYa and for rating the solution.

Hi,
After changing the batteries the calculator is restored to factory defaults, but the screen contrast may change. In your case (even if you did not just change batteries) the screen may be too dark. Lighten it a bit.
Press [2nd] key and release it.
Press and hold [DownArrow] until screen is light enough.

Hope it helps.

Blank lines across the screen of a TI-86 graphing calculator

Try this, hook up new battery and go to MODE and darken and lighten the screen.. do it ten to fifteen times. if that doesn't help, try hook up most left and most right's battery terminal to a DC supply at 4.5V. dont go above 4.5 it will fry your calc (it is design to handle 3V). now you are forcing extra juice into the dead LCD screen lines... and reapeat the MODE + darken trick. I fixed mine like that! Works! and remeber to leave it completely black(darkest) for a while to keep that dead line alive!

Texas instruments ti-86 screen problem

The TI-86 uses a very small, very thin ribbon cable to connect the display board to the LCD. The cable is about 2.5 " wide and about 4" long, and is only slightly thicker than a piece of paper but has about 40+ leads buried inside. Over time the leads will break at the folds (there are at least two folds in this cable to fit it down inside the case). There is no cheap solution to fix this problem. You might have some "Mr. Fix-it" try to fix it, but he will tell you to throw it away after he renders it completely inoperable. The calculator uses two Torx bit screws at the bottom of the case (T-6 size) so you will have to get the correct screwdriver to open the case. Save your money, sanity and time and use it till you can't stand the missing lines and throw it out. Even the data cable looks like it is glued down so if it lifts off after being cooked or frozen a couple of dozen times in the back of your car you can't fix this.
