HP Photosmart C7280 - Error:Oxc18a0001 (Ink system failure) Gone through the "hardware failure status cleared" + "ink initialization process" + a hard boot ( unplug power while on). Printed four self test diagnostic pages and one nozzle test with ideal results. I still get the error messsage and printer will not print.

First, the printer is a HP Photosmart C7280 inkjet (all-in-one).
Second, I tried the cartridge removal approach and it does not work.
Third, I tried the *+#, code 123,clear hardeware status and I get one page to print from the printer interface ie: Self test diagnostic page or the nozzle test. Once that page cycles< I am right back to the Ink system failure error.I tried the process three times with the same result. The diagnostic page and nozzle test page show bright color.Ink is flowing.

Finding both white ribbons was a challenge. The sequence of ribbons on the face of the board was BLACK, WHITE, BLACK. There were two white ribbons on the back side of the computer board. I was able to pull both black ribbons on the front of the board and try your restart but it did not work. Then I pulled the two white ribbons on the berried on the back and it did not work.

  • jeff769 Nov 23, 2010

    Reset System did not work
    (OK,cancel,black,color and turn off)
I beleave that it is a software/firmware issue.

  • jeff769 Nov 23, 2010

As you can see in my original request, both approaches have been tried.

  • jeff769 Nov 23, 2010

Please educate me on this process. I am a newbe with this website. What is the best approach on solving this problem with others seeing the process I go through.

  • jeff769 Nov 23, 2010

This time before I went through the 123 process again, I cleaned the contacts of the ink cartridges

  • jeff769 Nov 24, 2010

Yes, I followed the process again. Same results. Able to print off a test page which showed great color then it locked up showing INK SYSTEM FAILURE.
Let me make you aware of one point, I use refilled cartridges from our local store. I have been using these products on three different brands of printers and plotters for the past two years with no ill effects except for HP printers. I had a HP Photosmart D7360 that would lock up using the refills only after I used the auto updates on software. I purchased another printer (the same model) but would not allow updates and to date have no problems with that unit.
Now my newer Photosmart C7280 which uses the same cartridges is having problems as indicated in the original complaint.

  • jeff769 Nov 24, 2010

Your product fix is for a 8250 model. I have a Photosmart C7280. I have gone to the HP website and downloaded all updates with no concrete solution.

  • jeff769 Nov 27, 2010

Your solution is for a 8250. This is a Photosmart C7280.

There is no firmware update in Step 2 for the C7280.

  • jeff769 Nov 28, 2010

Tried the process of removing software and installing. It did not help.

Tried to use print diagonostic utility and it did not help.

With software removed, I still get the error message upon starting the printer

Hello,

disconnect the printer from your computer, uninstall the printer software/program from your computer's control panel, restart your computer, reinstall the printer software and try again. If that still does not solve the problem, then you will have to follow a plan B option.

You will have to download Hp diagnostic utility on your your computer, install is on your computer and it will help to detect and solve the problem.

Visit the hp link below, read all the information on the page and download the diagnostic tool from the page.

Good luck.

Someone answered this exact question on YahooAnswers, and here's what they said:

The page also has a link to the help page on the HP website.
Sounds like a firmware update might do the trick, hope so, and good luck.

Welcome to Fixya

It seems that you already tried all possible solution on your printer. The 123 solution should worked. It happened to my printer 2 months ago. Could you go back again with the process.

1. Press and hold the "*" key. Press the "#" key and release both keys.
2. Display should say "Enter Special Key Combo"
3. Press and release in sequence the "1", "2" and "3" buttons.
4.Display should say "Support" and display the FW rev (something like R0631R)
5. Press and release the right arrow button until the display says "System Configuration Menu".
6. Press and release the "OK" button.
7. Display should say "Hardware failure status". If it is not there, Arrow Key over to "Hardware failure status",
8. Press and release the "OK" button.
Display should say "Hardware failure status: Clear.
9. Press OK to clear".
10. Press and release the "OK" Button. Message changes to "Hardware failure status Cleared.
11. Press Cancel to continue".
12. Press and release the "CANCEL" button as many times as necessary, so that, either the "Welcome to Photosmart Express" screen appears, or, the "Ink System Failure" screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.
13. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
14. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer.
15. Turn the unit on. The printer may display message "USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER" followed by "PRESS OK TO CONTINUE". Press OK.
16. The Printer will start the "ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS". Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.

If all this process has been followed and same thing occurs then this could be a firmware issue. You need to send the printer to HP for repair or for firmware update.

Thank you for using FIxya!

Hi,

This is a common problem and if you call HP, they would try to sell you another printer in lieu of this. Let me provide you with few tricks that might reset. If this would not help, revert and i could follow up from there :-

Reset the system by holding down the OK, Cancel, Black, and Color buttons down at the same time and turn the 3310 off. Keep holding the buttons down until the printer shuts off and then turn it back on. You will have to turn the printer off twice and then it will recalibrate.

Let me know,so that we could proceed.

Hope i helped you.

    Thanks for your response!!

    It
signifies a hardware failure in the Ink System which is responsible for
sending signals to the ink cartridge to print ink on paper. It is not software or firmware issue. This is a common problem on most of these models after some time.

    Some
times its only a bad cartridge / print head and most times its even the
circuit board and other sensors involved that go bad.

    If
you send it to HP for repair, in 90% cases they just replace the printer
because repair is expensive. But as its out of warranty, they will
    charge you for that.

Even if you want to repair if on your own
you will have to buy the ink system assembly from them which will be
more costly then buying a new printer.

I wish i could have a better solution.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

Turn the unit on. The printer may display message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”. Press OK. The Printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page. Good Luck!

Ink System Failure - Ink System has failed. Unable to print. Error Oxc18a0001 Turn power off, then on again.

The ink system failure message has a chance to be fixed or it may be a permanent issue. It can be pointing toward a firmware failure in the printer and if that is the case the following steps should fix it. Press and hold the ?*? key. Press the ?#? key and release both keys. Display should say ?Enter Special Key Combo? Press and release in sequence the "1?, ?2? and ?3? buttons. Display should say ?Support? and display the FW rev (something like R0631R) Mine reads R0631M . Press and release the right arrow button until the display says ?System Configuration Menu?. Press and release the ?OK? button. Display should say ?Hardware failure status?. If not there already, Arrow Key over to ?Hardware failure status?, Press and release the ?OK? button. Display should say ?Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear?. Press and release the ?OK? Button. Message changes to ?Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue?. Press and release the ?CANCEL? button as many times as necessary, so that, either the ?Welcome to Photosmart Express? screen appears, or, the ?Ink System Failure? screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
