The correct setting is whatever setting you want. Set the fan on at some temperature, set the fan off temperature at about 20 degrees below the on setting. If it still runs a short time, either increase the on time or decrease the off time. If the off temperature is comfortable to you then I would suggest increasing the on temp. Do the changes in small steps. Good luck and keep that oil burner tuned...

My furnance keeps turning off and I could go to furnance flip switch on and it only last 5 minutes then shuts off again

You may want to check the limit switch or you could have a issue with the gas valve or transformer. I would check the low voltage transformer first, Sometimes I have found that under load the transformer will open ( quit working) and will close after power is removed and it cools down, It indicates a bad internal connection.

Hi,
It appears to be the fan limiter switch. It comes on at a certain temp when heating up and shuts off on the high end of its setting. Once the burners are shut down, the fan continues for a few minutes to cool down the burners. The limiter switch is adjustable but it sounds to me to be defective and should be replaced. Good luck and stay warm, :-)

Weathermaker 8000 furnance flashing code 31 blower comes on for 90 sec .. then shuts off .. then other fan goes on.. don't see any flames or lighting goin on can you help?

31 PRESSURE SWITCH DID NOT CLOSE OR REOPENED - If open longer than five minutes,
inducer shuts off for 15 minutes before retry. Check for: - Excessive wind
- Proper vent sizing - Defective inducer motor
- Low inducer voltage (115VAC) - Defective pressure switch
- Inadequate combustion air supply - Disconnected or obstructed pressure tubing
- Low inlet gas pressure (if LGPS used) - Restricted vent
If it opens during blower on-delay period, blower will come on for the selected blower
off-delay.

Coleman furnace and the fan takes awhile to come on then runs for about a minute then shuts down. im thinking the fan cycling switch was moved and now takes longer to reach temp

If it operates on a fan/limit switch it is possible the settings are wrong. Typical settings are: Fan Off-110F Fan On-140F High Limit-170F. If these are correct, you probably have a bad f/l switch. The bi-metal spring in these switches fatigue and will not rotate the switch smoothly.

Limit Switch

It is rare that a limit switch goes bad. It is a safety control. If it is shutting off your furnace there is a problem that it is protecting you from.
If the limit switch is shutting the unit down your furnace is overheating. Check the filters. Check for any obstruction in the blower assembly. Check to see if you can raise the blower speed. Make sure all registers are open in the house. Your evaporator coil could be obstructed if you do not take good care of your filters.

Furnace come on then fan stops while burner still is on, then fan comes on for 1 min. and goes off over and over

This could be a couple of things, first is the fan limit switch. Make sure your fan limit is set at the correct settings, there is a fan on setting and a flame shut off setting located on the front of air handler inside the front cover. Usaully set at 140 fan on 200 gas shut off. You do not say what unit you have so this could be a pc board or module. Second this could be the blower it's self over heating and shutting down, feel if motor is gettig hot. This could be a run cap. or motor it's self. But it is more than likely the limit switch.
