New compressor, very expensive repair, unless it is under the 5 year system warrantee. If it is out of warrantee then junk it. Buy a Whirlpool or Kitchen Aid refrigerator, and buy a wall mount 2000 joule or higher surge protector to help prevent this from happening again. Lowes has the "Prime" brand surge protectors for 12.00 to 20.00. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

Compressor is short,Model FF 350.This is 350 lt.double door frost free fridge.Compresser needs to be replaced,It is bought in April 2003

If you have had recent power failures, OFTEN the PTC motor starter for the compressor gets fried. The part can cost $50 or if you shop online as low as $2. What happens is if power briefly goes off and compressor has been running, the pressure is built up and when pwoer comes right back on, the PTC starter cannot start the compressor under pressure. Usually the compressor will get hot and just hum. The PTC unit is in a box that plugs on the side of the compressor. There is a capacitor that survives this and if you reuse that, you can get just the PTC part for less than $2.

The PTC is a little disk about the size of a quarter and fourr times as thick. It comes in a plastic box that the capacitor plugs onto and the whole thing then plugs onto the compressor.

I heard a loud crackling, popping noise coming from the rear of my refrigerator, and smelled plastic burning. I unplugged it and removed the cover, once I could see inside, I plugged it in again and...

The compressor has an internal ground which is why that happened. You should replace the whole machine in my opinion, because with that kind of problem, I can guarentee that not only is the compressor gone, but the control board in the ref which is wired directly to the compressor has been damaged as well. I've seen this a few times and know its not worth the nmoney to put into the machine.

I have a 5,000 btu frigidaire a/c and the compressor won't kick in

Could be the starter contactor, the capacitor or the compressor by itself . You can see the condition of the starter and maybe clean or if it looks bad , must be replaced. The same goes for the capacitor if the compressor is humming. But if the compressor motor is not starting up , please check for starting current with a clamp tester, if it goes higher and stalls then the compressor/motor is faulty.
Might need help to do an overhauling.
I hope this advice helps.

Whirlpool upright freezer making buzzing noise and not working

I had a similar problem yesterday. I woke up and the freezer was not working anymore. It would make a buzzing noise and then it would click and shut off. I looked online for some possible solutions. Here is what I did:
I unplugged the fridge. I pulled it out and took off the cardboard backing. I used an air compressor to blow out all of the dust and dirt that had accumulated on the condenser coils. A shop-vac just wasn't powerful enough to pull out all of the dust/dirt. After that, I plugged it back in....and the same thing was happening. It would buzz, and then it would click off. I figured out that the "click" was coming from a starter relay (a small plastic piece attached to the big black compressor). I detached the plug from the relay and then detached the relay from the compressor. The relay was burned out. It turns out this is a common problem with the relay. I replaced the relay for $50 (from an appliance parts store) and put the whole thing back together in about 10 minutes.
I plugged the fridge back in and the compressor started, and now the freezer works better than other. I saved about $400 doing it myself, all in about one hour. And better yet, my wife was very impressed. Not bad for a doctor.

You probably should replace the start relay before it burns out the compressor terminals.

Frigidaire side by side

My first thought is a compressor not running from your description of the clicking.

Compressor problems can be:

Could be a Relay, stiff compressor/motor assembly, low voltage, run, or start capacitor if so equipped.

You will need a voltage (amp meter would help) meter to check the voltage (amp draw) at start up on the compressor to determine if you are making headway on finding the cause.

You will have to verify the voltage for sure and during start up 1st unplug the refrigerator let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. 1st During this time check the voltage at the wall plug. 2nd AT the compressor relay (2 wires to the compressor) when it first try's to start meaning while someone plugs it in. The reading can be up to 10% lower during this time. continue to watch the volts as it runs until it clicks again and cuts off. The voltage then should return to where it was at the plug-in. If not We now have a problem outside the compressor area. If so we are on the right path.

A replacement relay and overload (with the run and or start capacitor if equipped) replaced as a whole at the same time will either confirm its one of these components. With them replaced and correct voltage range during start of the compressor it will either work or your compressor is out.

Frigidaire refrigerator

check the overload, take it loose and inspect it for a burnt spot shake it if it rattles replace the relay
you either have a relay bad or a stuck compressor
the compressor has a 5 year warranty on the part, the relay 1
so if you relpace the relay and it still doesnt run the compressor, call for serviece under warranty
