Question about Quickie Wheelchairs Quickie Aspire Power Wheelchair Cane Crutch Holder

1 Answer

Have a Sunrise Aspire chair w/new batterie, charged by the repairman. Want to keep it charged regularly (not let it run down). DO I NEED TO TOTALLY DISCONNECT THE POWER HOOKUPS IN THE BACK when I recharge (plugging charger cord into the receptacle on the front of the chair) or can I just plug it into the front, plug it into the wall and charge, then unplug the charger cord and GO?

You do not need to unplug the large 9 pin beau plug in the rear or the smaller 3 pin molex plug when you charge the chair. Do not unplug them or you will not charge the chair.
Use your charging cord as you describe "plug it into the front, plug it into the wall and charge, then unplug the charger cord and GO". Hope this helps.

One more question - he also has a BuzzAround scooter (by Golden Technologies). Had it for over 5 years, very dependable. In light of what you just said above, I've gotta ask: Need I disconnect all leads to THAT BuzzAround battery (as I have been doing) from the rest of the unit before charging, or may I do it all "on board" in the same manner described before: Plug to wall, charge, unplug from wall - GO!" ??? Thanks - You're a PEACH!!!! :)

The same principle applies to the Buzzaround by Golden Tech. Please leave the batteries connected to the scooter when charging. Charge the batteries on-board by plugging into the wall outlet, charge, unplug and have fun!

How long can i run chair on one charge'

With new, fully charged batteries, you can get a good 8 miles at full speed with a normal weight load on the chair. The chair goes about 4-5 mph, so an hour and a half or more at full speed on level terrain. Be sure to always recharge daily, keep the chair on the charger when not in use(batteries will die if you don't)and avoid running the batteries all the way down....try to stay in the top 2/3 charge range and you will get more life.

The only time the chair worked [approx. 1/2 hour] was when the repairman cleaned the cables. Since that, the chair charges, turns green for full charge, and only flashes red as soon as the joystick is...

hi.

the link below is for the owners manual for the quickie aspire power wheelchair, free download in pdf format.
http://www.wheelchair-review.co.uk/wheelchair-files/wheelchair-manuals/sunrise-medical-wheelchairs/quickie-aspire-power-wheelchair.pdf
the "cane crutch holder" is an acessory part that you can get, fitted to the back of the seat, to hold a crutch or cane. it does not affect the chair itself at all.
there are two most likely reasons for your problem, neither of which actually involve the arm and controller.
1. if the battery light is flashing 9 times when you try to move, then you need to check the motor locks are engaged properly. see page 27 of the manual for photos and location. these are also known as "freewheel levers" and allow you to disconnect the motors to push the chair manually. if the levers are engaged properly, it is quite possible that the switch, or switch wires have broken and the chair thinks that they are off. these are very cheap and easy to replace and are located where the lever connects inside the chair.

2. if the battery light comes on and stays on, then you may need to have the batteries checked. if the batteries have not been charged for a while then sulphur may have built up on the lead plates inside the battery. this can mean that the batteries will show fully charged, but as soon as you try to draw power, they cannot function due to the sulphur, and instantly show as flat.
any auto shop should be able to perform a battery load test for you to test this. a 100amp load test for about 6 seconds will test the battery performance and let you know if they need replacing. most places will do this test for free but the batteries need to be fully charged first.

hopefully, one of these solutions will work as these are the most common fault for the symptoms you are describing. you should find the manual quite useful as well.

please feel free to ask if you need more information.

hope this helps

A few months ago, I got 2 new batteries for my Jazzy and the first month everything was fine. Lately the batteries have been losing power abnormally fast. We were told to keep the chair plugged in at all...

Jeff WRONG!!!!!! I would demand that the dealer give you new batteries (they should be under a six month warranty anyway) You are to NEVER repeat NEVER leave the charger or chair plugged in all the time. The most you should ever have to charge the batteries is overnite or 12 hours. Never leave the charger plugged into the chair more than 24 hours. Doing so might even void the warranty. Tell that dealer or however told you that to take a hike or at least know what they are talking about. Have them read an owners manual (if they can read) under care and use of batteries Geez it just upsets me to have people give out such bad information to their customers. Now the batteries need to be replaced and when you get new ones charge them before you use the chair then charge then everynight if you use the chair daily if you don't use it daily make sure it is fully charged when you put it up and at least once week (if idle that long). I would recommend using your chair daily for a little while to run the batteries down some and then charging overnite for the first 20 days that you have the new batteries this will break them in. Hope this helps and sorry for the rant

I don't know where my moms wheelchair was purchased, to see if it is still under warrantee

DJ, Did Medicare purchase your Mom's chair? You can contact Sunrise Medical at 1-800-333-4000 and ask if the chair is under warranty. You will have to give them the chair's serial number.

If the chair is less than a year old then all the parts are under warranty except the batteries. If it is not under warranty and Medicare purchased her chair contact Repair Xpress at 1-877-581-3733 to get it repaired medicare will cover 80% of the repair costs Hope this helps you

Flashing battery life lights, quickie 525s

The chair is either in freewheel or the number of flashes will indicate an error code to tell what the problem is. Look in your users manual for error codes or contact Sunrise Medical Tech support

The chair has been standing idle for quite some months and the battery is obviously dead. Will I be able to re-charge the batteries or will I need to purchase new ones?thanks

Hi. This depends on how the batteries perform after you recharge them.
Sometimes you can get a bit more life by completely running them flat. Then reverse charge them. Then run flat again and recharge the correct way. Use a light bulb to run them flat. You will need to remove the batteries from the machine to do this. When you charge the batteries, charge them in parallel with a 12 volt car charger. Keep the charge rate down to 4-5 amps. This will ensure that both batteries are charged up to the same level.
Be carefull with batteries, as they give of hydrogen and oxygen gas when charging, and this can explode if there are any sparks from the charger terminals.
After doing this try the batteries in the machine. Charge them with the correct charger and see how far you can travel.
The batteries probably wont be as good as new ones, but they might do for a while.
Good luck. Neil.

Have an Aspire Quicky chair, power light bar on arm rest shows all orange, chair barely moves, batteries have been plugged into wall socket for most of a year, how do test for bad batteries or bad...

It's likely after sitting for so long that the batteries are shot. Sealed-gel-batteries should be fully charged, then totally disconnected before storage, and then put back into service within a year, or placed back into the chair and recharged again, and disconnected again.

Test the batteries using a voltmeter set to DCV, in the 20 volt or more range. Put the probes across the terminals. A good 12 volt battery should read in the 12.5-13.5 voltage area. If it isn't hitting those numbers after a charge, it is no good; time to recycle. Your chair takes two batteries, which are gel, Group 22 or Group 24 type and will cost you about $350-$450 for a set. Group 24 will give you the maximum range for this chair.

Battery will not fully charge but will run with partial charge

Two things can be wrong, first your batts may be old and need new ones. Have them load tested at an auto part store. Most powerchairs use two 12 volt batts. If you batts are good you should have between 12.5 and 13.5 volts on a surface charge and 11.5 to 12.5 on a load test charge. Second, if you had your chair stored away for a couple of months then your batts died and need to be replaced. If you are luck a "boost charge" might work. If you are planing to keep it stored for months at a time, you must charge the chair once every couple of weeks to keep batts fresh.
