I lose the connection after several hours, but my internet says it is good but out of range.

Hard to help you without knowing what your problem is or what router you have. Is it on the 2.4 ghz band or 5 ghz band?
Do you lose connection to the router or does your router drop the connection to the internet?
Does the router reboot/restart? You have the latest firmware?
Do you have a dual band router (2.4 n 5ghz) with the same SSIDs? Change the SSID on one to a different name like NAME5ghz. Could be your device is switching between the two.
It could be a security setting, are you using WPA2?
Could be a setting in the router causing a time out.
Could be interference from a Microwave, cordless phone, elevator, car wash, garage door opener. You could try changing your channel. Default is 6. Auto usually results in chl 6 for 2.4 ghz routers. Look on your laptop for wireless s/w that will show all routers in range, what their broadcast strength is and what channel they are on. Dell has some good s/w for this.

While it's true interference could be causing the issue, there are several other possibilities.

More than likely it's not your router that's losing connection, but your actual internet connection itself. If you're using a cable or DSL service for you internet connection they may be temporarily dropping the connection. It's common in large communities, apartment complexes, etc for connections to "blink" in response to increased bandwidth loads. It's also possible that if your connection is DSL based that your telephone line is connected to a bad circuit.

I would start by watching your Cable or DSL modem and see if you notice the Internet light change status while your watching a movie (when it drops connection). If you do you, should be able to call your provider to come out for a service call.

The only way I can connect to the internet is if I am plugged into the router. I need to get it wireless and hook up another computer. I have unplugged and reset my router several times. Is something wrong...

1.Log into router. Using either 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 in a browser window that is ( internet Explorer or Firefox)
2. Verify wireless router name( on the computer) >>> ( on/off) ( router status window)
3.Note router name you are connecting to.
4.. Check the laptop do ipconfig /all to see current IP addresses.
5. Set the laptop up in the router by WEP KEY or MAC address. This set up in the "security tab" in the router. using 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 to access through a browser.
6.Note router name you are connecting to.
7. Move the laptop about 20ft away and try to log on to the internet.
This is for all routers to set up wirelessly.
8. check for firmware update at the manufacturers site for your model router
9. cell phones, cordless phones, digital TV's, can affect the data signal from a router. Also distance from the router can be a factor. If your router is in a basement place the router to a upper floor and center it in the room.

Hi,

we need to first figure out whether it the modem or the router which is dropping the connection.

Please connect one of your computer directly to the modem, by pass the router and access the internet. If the connection drops then its the modem which is dropping the connection and you need to contact your isp to check it.

If the internet works fine directly with the modem then its your router which is dropping the connection. To fix the router we can upgrade it firmware.

To upgrade the firmware please visit the link below;

Note; If you are not comfortable upgrade the firmware then don’t do it. If not done properly then it can damage your router.

Use "Admin" as the username in the pop-up box and leave the password blank.
3. Step 3

You will need to check the settings of the router. You are able to go online when you connect the computer directly to the modem. Your internet service provider is DSL. You can try to reconfigure the router. Press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. release it. unplug the power to the router. plug it back in. wait for 1 minute and try to reconfigure the router. Can no longer pick up router signal

Does the wireless light still lit on the router? You can try changing the channel on the router (1 6 or 11) ans moving the antenna. If those things did not work upgrade the firmware of the router and reset to factory default. Do not forget to save the configuration file before you reset to factory default.

Wireless router dropping then disappeared

There are two possible generic reasons I have found in reviewing internet posts.

One claims there may be a windows issue with hiding the SSID (or router name) and enabling WEP or WPA secure/encrypted wireless connections and random disconnections of service to the wireless adapter. The recommended solution is not to hide the SSID (or router name) and maintain the WEP or WPA secure/encrypted service.

Another claims that there may be an "overload" of requirements on a specific wireless channel in your area (sometimes by non routers such as wireless phones). Many routers default to channel 6. I you have a wireless monitor on a PC that shows routers and their channel assignments nearby -- if everyone is on channel 6 you may want to move to channel 1 or 11 and see if your device works better. There are some wireless routers with capability for 108mbs transmission rates that actually transmit on two channels at once that could be affecting your response so if channel 1 does not work try channel 11 or vice versa.
