Question about Toshiba 120GB USB 2.0 Portable External 120 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a 320gb toshiba external hard drive, i've been using it around 3 years without any trouble. A few days ago i lost the cable connecting it to the PC. I bought a few cables but no use. Doesn't matter which cable i try, it keeps blinking red-blue light constantly and i can't access the external hard drive. I tried to see if the PC can read the hard drive in the computer > manage > disc management. PC can't see the external hard drive

Hi there,

This is because there is a connection problem between the external drive and the computer. If you have changed cables to no avail, you can open the casing of the external drive where you will find the hard disk inside. Unplug the two cables connected to the harddisk and replug it after a minute. Then try again. If it still does not work, then you need to buy just a usb enclosure and plug the harddisk there to be able to use it again.

Hope this helps. Thank you for using FixYa.

I lost the power cord ,whath is the specifications for remplace it? thanks

Have you tried to use it without power cable just plugged into your computer thru USB. Some external drives work this way only. Should try this anyway. Check on the lower side (down) of the disk to see the AC voltage specs (should be a sticker or engraved part there)

SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 320GB Power up problem

It could be that it's internal power supply burnt out,
in which case the drive itself could still be fine.

Try opening up the external case, and removing the drive.
Once you do, plug it in to your computer directly using its SATA cables, and see if that works.

Hope I helped,
Tom

trying using it on another system and and see if it happens like that. if it does, you may want to get a driver for the hard drive. it is likely the driver is corrupted. try it on another port also.

Hello,

The sequence you plug in the hard drive shouldn't matter. I would click Start -> Run and type:

eventvwr

Click okay. When the Event Viewer loads, click Application. Do you see any errors associated with the times you plug in the drive? Also, check the System events and look for the same thing.

If I were you, I would replace the cable connecting the computer to the external drive. If that doesn't work, I would get another external enclosure and transfer your drive to it.
