Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore 80 series top load, direct drive washer. It will fill with h2o but will not agitate or spin. I had changed the moter coupler prior to this new problem and I rechecked it and it looks fine. When the washer fills with h2o and is supposed to go into the agitation cycle I can hear something turning, running, spinning or something under the basket where the motor coupler would be. I removed the entire agitator and let washer fill with h2o (lowest level) to see if the shaft would spin and it did not. Something was running but the shaft wasn't turning. PLEASE help me with this. Thank you!

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Next, see the whirlpool / kenmore Service Manual for top load, direct drive washers:

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

I'd first pull the cabinet and completely remove the motor coupler, check that the holes in the center rubber piece are intact and then replace it.

If the holes in the center piece and the prongs from the plastic pieces aren't ligned up correctly when re-installing it, you can strip the center unit. It would look fine from a glance but wouldn't be able to drive the gearcase.

Since you CAN hear the motor, the problem does point to the coupler:

Also see the following for a detailed description of how to replaced it.

I have a kenmore 80 series washer (11028802890) that won't agitate or spin. Does this machine have a belt or is it the coupling? I would like to try to fix it myself, if possible.

Good for you. I don't think this model has a belt, I believe it is a direct drive with a coupler. Most likely, if you can hear the motor, the coupler has done it's job and sheared. The coupler is 20 bucks and my wife and I just changed ours out. I need the entire model number and I will get you the part schematic and we will get you going.

I just replaced the transmission on my Kenmore 80. No agitation

your motor turns one way for the spin cycle and the other way for agitate. remove the coupler and test it that way.

Kenmore 80 series washing machine fills but wont agitate draqins but wont agitste or spin

My bet is on the drive coupler. if you can here the motor run and the machine will drain water then 99.9% it will be the drive coupler.

This coupler is behind the motor and is what conects the motor with the transmission.

Kenmore Series 80 top loading washer that doesn't spin or agitate

Unplug machine, remove water pump and motor, behind the motor is a coupler, take broken parts to your local appliance parts store. Costs 16 bucks, replace the broken parts with new ones, reassemble machine. Never ever do a blanket/comforter in your machine again!!

Kenmore washer 80 series 110 model not spinning.

unless your washer is over 20 years old, then it wont have a belt. the temperature of the water wont have anything to do with it spinning or not.
need to know if it agitates or drains and just wont spin.
if it agitates but no spin or drain, then you have a bad lid switch.
if it wont agitate or spin, but will drain, then you have a broken drive coupling.

Kenmore washer machine series 80

If it will not spin either, you most likely have a broken drive coupler. This machine is "direct drive" and has no belt. As techs, we see this several times during our work week. Otherwise, if you have the "two piece" agitator, you may simply need new "dogs" in the agitator. if the machine spins fine, fill it only on the smallest load size with no clothes in it. When the agitate cycle starts, take note if the bottom section of the agitator is going back and forth. If it is, and the upper part does not "ratchet" then you just need to rebuild the agitator and that is an easy job.
