Question about Kenmore 23913 Progressive PowerMate Bagged Canister Vacuum

The brush on the our progressive conister stops and starts. We have replaced the belt cleaned out all areas near the belt and it still starts and stops as if it is skipping of getting stuck on somthing.

Check the brush end bearings for debris build-up and sticking bearings--remove the brush assembly, and pull off the bearing blocks. Clean the pin ends on the brush and the interiors of the bearing blocks with Q-tips, then lightly oil (3-in-one or similar) the bearing blocks and pin ends. Reassemble the brush into the sweeper head without the belt on--check for free turning of the brush. If ok, install the belt, and check for operation. Hope this helps!

Your belt is probably stretched, replace it. Also check to be sure nothing is lodged in the brushes

Kenmore upright Model 116 31912101 Brush doesn't turn. Little red reset pin doesn't move.

Something is jammed in it or the belt is bad.Turn it upside down.You will see 4-6 screws.Remove the screws and the plate they are holding.Now the brush is exposed.The belt hooks on to the brush and a small wheel on the other end.Remove the brush and belt.Make sure the area is free of debris.While you have it off,replace the belt.

I have a kenmore progressive vacuum with a belt reset button that trips out everytime you try to vacuum. It does it in about 5 to 10 seconds. Can I bypass the reset button or can you help me determine...

A lot of times the reset button is tripping because there is a problem. The problem could be with the brush roller in this case. A lot of times I see this unit for repair and the end of the brush is so compacted with hair and debris that it has also started to melt. This will also "fool" the reset and trip off. If you are near a service depot try there, or try sears parts if you need to have the brush roller replaced.

Bypassing the reset button is not advisable on any machine.

Brush will not turn

The vacuum needs a new belt. Check the brush roller, if it turns easily without resitance, it needs a new belt. Get your model number off the back of the machine. It's on a sticker near the floor with UL logo on it. Go to Sears and gets some belts.

The brushes will not turn when on and cannot move them even manually

Drive belt has most likely broke and jammed inside the power head. Remove the bottom plate on the power head and replace the drive belt.

The agitator on my kenmore progressive vacuum won't keep going. It keeps stopping while vacuuming.

This sounds like the belt that drives the beater bar on the vacuum. The beater bar bearings and brushes could be plugged with debris and/or the belt is simply worn out and needs to be replaced. Unplug the vacuum, turn it over and look for clogging.

If you can't see any, then you may need to remove the bottom plate of the vacuum and clean out and/or replace the drive belt and clean the area. These belts and other components are usually available at Sears Hardware or main stores. Make sure you get the correct belt for your vacuum.

If the beater bar brushes are substantially worn, it would also be a good idea to replace the beater bar as well. These parts wear out after a few years. Try to work on the unit in a location that is well ventilated and the debris doesn't make a mess inside your house.

I have a whispertone vacuum, different model #, but maybe instructions will be the same. Turns out I didn't need a new belt, just clean out the crud and reset overload protector. The instructions in the manual tell you to remove the light cover and bulb first. To do this, press in and lift both sides. Push in and turn bulb counterclockwise to remove. (you need to do this because the next step involves turning the unit over). This takes you to
Step 2. Unscrew the cover screws ( on either side of bulb).
Step 3. Turn unit over. To remove cover, insert screwdriver at cover tabs on both sides and twist to release tabs.
Step. 4 Turn unit right side up. Press handle release pedal and lower the swivel. Tilt cover forward from back until front snaps free.
Step 5. Carefully insert and twist screwdriver at each brush support to free brush from base.
Step 6. Remove worn belt.
Step 7. Slide brush supports off to check and clean brush support areas.

To replace belt: slide washers and brush supports onto brush assembly.
Install new belt over motor drive, then over brush sprocket.
Snap brush supports into place on base. Be sure brush supports are not upside down.
Line up front of cover and base. Rest cover on front edge of base. Tilt cover to back. Press cover firmly until side tabs snap into place. Replace cover screws, light bulb and light cover.

The beater won't turn

Un-plug the vacuum.

Turn the vacuum cleaner over and pop off or unscrew the bottom plate. The most common things are broken belt, clogged beater bar (usually hair), bad beater bar bearings, or the beater bar and belt is just plain worn out and needs replacing. If the brush nubs are very worn, replacing the belt alone won't help much.

Clean as much debris, hair etc as possible out of the unit. If you have a can of air like the type used to clean computer key boards, blow out the area and the motor if possible. Do this in a ventilated area or somewhere where it will not mess up your house.
