Question about Amana ABB2224DEW / ABB2224DEQ / ABB2224DEB Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Amana ABB222DE is the overload/capacitor the same thing as the compressor relay? I just had the compressor relay replaced in amana bottom mount. Frig cools fine but every 2 days or so buzzing noise clicks on....same problem I had prior to the relay replacement. Last time I didnt unplug until the refrig stopped working/cooling entirely. (and relay burnt out) Now if I unplug 1/2 hour it works for another 1-2 days before buzzing starts. Ran the service tests and on test #2 compressor/condenser fan test when I move the test from O to F the test creates the same buzzing sound. Cleaned the fan, and the Sound is definitely from compresser area. both fans are working. Is it time to give up on this amana??? Repairman said a few amana models had a bad chip in the compressor, but that has been taken care of. He felt Amana makes the best bottom freezer hands down, and rec. buying another. From reading this board it sounds like Amana & bad compressors go together like horse & buggy!

I have been doing refrigeration for over 30 years and I have never seen a compressor with a chip inside of it. Have you tried cleaning the condensor coils? I almost sounds like you have a weak start capacitor. Let me know if i can help you any futher.

yes, cleaned the coils. Is the start capacitor different from the compressor start relay? That is what was replaced during the service visit. When it acted up within a week, the repairman came back & told me I needed a new compressor. I thought the frige was totally gone, the compressor was very hot....... but after unplugging for 24 hours I replugged and it purred like a kitten. Cooling is fine.....I 'll try the capacitor if that is a different part than the start relay......

yes the start cap is different than the start relay. the start cap is a round looking thing that is usally at the compressor and is made of plastic. When you change any of the start componants it is good practice to change all. They do make what is call a 3 in one hard start kit that you can buy that will replace everything. let me know if this helps and please how about a rating. thank you. wally

Amana side by side refridg/freezer. Freezer not freezing, everything defrosted. Getting a buzzing noise then a click, then buzzing stops. Compressor overload?

:
Hi!
A relay starts the compressor with a higher voltage and then quickly kicks out
It does a lot of clicking (trying to start over and over again)
If thats what is happening with yours
Its best for a tech to replace The relay but you can do it
Take your model number to your Local Appliance parts store they will have a diagram
showing you how to install the relay. Its called a hard start relay
I use part no ERP410 POWER START RELAY, CAPACITOR AND OVERLOAD all in one. (110 v)

Our amana refrigerator is making a noise, a hum and then a "click". The freezer is no longer working and the fridge part is no longer cold. It's a 2004 and we don't know whether to get...

It sounds like you are hearing the overload on the compressor closing. When the overload closes the relay tries to start the compressor (that might be the buzzing sound) and if the compressor doesn't start the overload opens and turns the compressor off. You will need to replace the relay on the compressor.

Fan is running, but no cold air is coming out into the freezer or fridge. Blown compressor?

Not neccesarily. A compressor uses a relay to start it and an overload to protect it. If either of the components has failed, the compressor will not start. The part number for the relay, overload and run capacitor assembly is 67005560 and can be purchased for under $50 by calling Marcone Appliance Parts at 1-800-482-6022. Keep in mind you may have a locked rotor on the compressor, in which case the part will not repair the problem. Before you do anything, call AMANA at 1-866-616-2664 with your model and serial number ready as the compressor, which is part of the sealed system, may still be under warranty.

My amana bottom freezer model #abb1921dew smelled like smoke and the compressor was not running. I unplugged it over night and when plugged in again it appears to be running fine. Any suggestions?

I would suggest replaceing the overload/relay w/capacitor .
Pt # 67005560 . This piece , easily plugs onto the side of the compressor . If you replace it now , since it is already burnt , it would save you the trouble of replacing it later , when the compressor will not restart . It will happen again , due to the burning .

I have an Amana bottom freezer frigerator. The

Possibly a bad relay/overload or shorted run capacitor. If it was built between 2002 and 2005 it may be a bad compressor in which case you would want to check the warranty for possible coverage.
the relay/overload and run capacitor plug right into the compressor on the left hand side.
IF it isn't under warranty and the Oem part won't get it going pick up a 3in1 hard start for it they are easy to install and will get it working for you.

Not cooling

If it's clicking on and off like you say, replace the compressor start relay device and overload protector. These are located directly on the side of the compressor, usually contained within a dark plastic cover.

No cold in fridge or freezer: buzzing compressor

There is no start motor. If the brand of the compressor is a tecumpseh then it is most likely the problem and has a 5 yr warranty from the date of purchase. If it is an Embraco compressor I would try and overload and relay. They are all in one part sometimes called a start device.
