you could try replacing the power supply. if it still does not work, you probably fried the processor or motherboard. (or both). just make sure the replacement power supply has the same type of connectors on the power leads to the motherboard, hard drive, etc.

Hi Tiffany,

it sounds like there has been some sort of corruption of the files on the hard disk. You should see about booting from the Windows installation CD / DVD and copying all the files that are of importance to you (documents, photos, music, etc.) on to an external hard drive connected to the USB port or installed as a slave drive internally. Once you have saved all the files you need, shut off the PC and disconnect / remove the drive with your files. Then reinstall Windows again. Once done, shut off the PC and reconnect the drive with your files and copy them back to the hard drive and you should be good to go unless he drive is beginning to fail - in which case purchasing a new hard drive would be a good idea.

Display Properties should have a way to rotate the screen. You can also enable/disable the hot keys there.

It could be a fan making the noise. Either a fan is going bad, possibly a bearing or bushing. It could just be a wire that got too close to a fan and the blade hits the wire.

There is a couple other choices to choose from, but this should get the job done. Just copy and paste the link above in your browser window. Download the driver and follow instructions.

Paul,

Hi....The Dimension 5000 is definitely an older machine, but depending on what you plan to use it for and assuming everything still works ok, the PC can still be useful. You can still get parts for the machine, especially if you go to Ebay. www.ebay.com

For everyday computing like word processing or spreadsheets, it should still work ok, but will be slower than a newer machine.

Chris, what happens when you plug the hdmi connector into the TV and your adapter, while your computer is running and connected to the adapter?
Are there drivers required for the adapter?

As an alternative, you could install a video board in your Dell that includes an HDMI output. I have a laptop with one, and connect it to my TV often; works fine.

Three possible conditions of fan noise.

A condition of functional computer component parts
first, an overloaded memory due to several programs installed on the desktop bacground
second, a disk in the driver compartment generating fan energy to cool the system. Caused during movie displays using the computer disk drivers, or burning disks with the disk driver. Third, an extensive use of the computer requires more fan energer cooling capacity.

solving fan over tasking

1. free up the computer memory requirements by removing malfunctioning software programs
2. perform a computer defragmentation located by clicking START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, selecting the options disk defragment
a. defragmenting redistributes files into spaces producing an effeccient memory function requiring least fan capacity.
3. perform a computer malfunct programs cleanup by clicking START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, selecting the options of disk cleanup
a. the disk cleaning removes remnants of fragmented files making performanc effective requiring least fan generate energy

conditions of disfunction condition in a component part
1. a broken component of the computer system impeding the fans effective performance
a. a foreign object in the fan compartment causes loud noise
b. a broken fan due to over heating
c. a manufacturers condition of prior computers that performed on fan cooling rather than heat sunk dispensing and obsorption

Hi if the service tag is missing off the tower do the following.

Turn the PC on and press the F2 key to enter the BIOS screen, now look under the General option - System information, the service tag is listed here.

Click Exit to reboot the PC, now using another PC go to www.dell.co.uk and select the Support - Work option, then enter the tag number and down load the drivers to a USB stick and then install them on your PC.
