Possible dirt and dust in preforation on camera for mic or bad cable. i suspect the cable first since it is doing it with two different cameras.

Not with that camera.
To use the camera you will also need and A/D Converter.
That means an Analogue to Digital Converter.
Search for Canopus, they make a range of decent AV Converters.

Ask for IEEE1394 cable also called iLink or firewire.
Beaware that firewire has several types of socket configurations.

In most cases a 4 pin to 6 pin cable will work.
4 pin goes to the camera 6 or 9 pin goes to PC or Mac.
